Since I had them out...

My craft table was kind of covered in paper scraps and stamps from yesterday, so I decided to use some of those supplies to do a quick scrapbook page.

This is a 6x6 page...just the right size to fit on one of the shelves in our living room.  {I have about a hundred of those little stands that I got for free - I need to start putting 'em to use!}

The whole thing took me literally less than 10 minutes and I'm pretty happy with it.  Doesn't hurt that I absolutely. love. this. picture!

CPS Sketch #195

Felt the need to drag out some supplies and create with actual paper and supplies other than my computer...  I've been meaning to get a card out to my mom for all of her emotional support over the past couple weeks with all my job craziness and the fall-out from it so I headed on over to Card Positioning Systems blog for a sketch to get the mojo going and came up with this card for their latest sketch:

card recipe:
Cardstock:  Raspberry Fizz & Kraft-Papertrey Ink, White and Chocolate Chip from Stampin' Up.
Ink:  Chocolate Chip-Stampin' Up; Raspberry Fizz & Spring Moss from Papertrey Ink
Stamps:  Wishing You, Polka Dot Basics, and Women of Life all from Papertrey Ink.
Dies:  Nestibilities
(Patterned paper:  I designed that brown damask print on the kraft paper)

I forgot to take a picture of the inside, but it says "You're someone I look up to no matter how much I've grown."

Are you a card-maker?  Head on over to CPS for some sketch-inspiration!!  And then link up what you make, they have weekly drawings!

Mama said there'd be days like this...

There'd be days like this, mama said...

I am sad to report that my sweet, angelic, beautiful little girls have been possessed by evil little aliens.  Had to go to the grocery store.  MY girls behave in public.  They know how to keep their mama happy.  These little girls?  Pinching, hitting, yelling, crying, whining, fit throwing...all the no, no's in this family.  Complete with foot stomping and a major meltdown.  This mama needed a stiff drink before noon.

While they were serving time for criminal behavior  quietly spending some quality time in their respective bedrooms, I was able to do a little bit of design work to help salvage my sanity.

Here's a new stationery that I came up with:

and in a favorite color combo of mine right now: black, gray, and yellow

The design was inspired by some bedding that I saw at Target on Black Friday.  I also fell in love with a quilt that I saw there...but unfortunately don't need to purchase a new quilt right now... {sigh}  I could spend years in Target.  I love it.

PS...I did promise some fabric projects and they are coming soon!

Final Card in Modern Note Card Series

Hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving!!  I was slightly bummed because I had been hoping to head back to the good old midwest to visit family for the holiday, but we weren't able to go.  Such is the way of the military life.  We did have a wonderful day at home, though.  My husband made a delicious turkey and we had TONS of food and yummy pies and all kinds of good stuff.  Definitely a day to be thankful for.

We did just a tiny bit of Black Friday shopping today.  I went to Justice, Bath & Body Works, Target, Walmart, and the fabric store.  **Expect some fun sewing projects to pop up on here soon!**  It was mostly uneventful except that Misfit #1 broke a candle while we were in Bath & Body Works.  In her defense, she was holding the candle because I asked her to, and then tried to put back a candle that Little Miss had gotten off the shelf when she was supposed to be sitting in her stroller.  She was trying to be helpful.  But she dropped the candle I had her hold.  Glass went everywhere.  There was a collective gasp in the store.  Thankfully the staff was  really nice and didn't make a huge deal so we avoided any further embarrassment.  She felt pretty bad, though.  Poor kid.  That is precisely why my misfits should be left at home during shopping trips...but it was kind of unavoidable to have them with me this time.

On to the card...final card in the set.

And a peek at the matching address labels.

So what do you guys think?

Mama’s Holiday Wish List Meme

TodaysMama (link to: http://bit.ly/tmwishlist) and GameStop (link to: http://bit.ly/gamestop10) are giving away a sleighful of gifts this holiday season and to enter I’m sharing this meme with you.

1. What is your holiday wish for your family?  Like many others, I wish for health, happiness, and togetherness for my family.  Being a a military family is difficult because many times we are great distances away from our family members and are on a completely different schedule with deployments and other missions that can come up.  This year I'm wishing for plenty of time to enjoy being  together with our immediate family and our extended family before my husband deploys again in February.

2. What is your Christmas morning tradition?  The kids usually wake us up around 5 a.m. shouting "Santa came! Santa came!"  Then we have some donuts and hot chocolate while the kids open their stockings and then gifts.

3. If you could ask Santa for one, completely decadent wish for yourself, what would it be?
A Nikon D90 with a telephoto lens!

4. How do you make the holidays special without spending any money?
we enjoy our time together doing things like playing board games, playing soccer or football in the backyard, going for family walks, and creating handmade gifts for one another.

5. What games did you play with your family growing up? We played a lot of card games when I was a kid, Crazy 8's, Old Maid, Go Fish, and Rummy.  We also played Bunco quite a bit.  Outside we played t-ball, flashlight tag, and Hide and Seek.

6. What holiday tradition have you carried on from your own childhood?  We do an advent calendar which is something we did every year when I was growing up.  And the kids each get an orange in their stocking, like I did as a child.

7. Where would you go for a Christmas-away-from-home trip?  To visit family in Indiana.

8. Check out GameStop (link to: http://bit.ly/gamestop10) and tell us, what are the three top items on your GameStop Wish List this year?
1.  xbox 360/Kinect
2.  DSi Pink or Light Blue
3.  Zumba Fitness for wii

Motivation Monday: Operation Fun with Kids & a new venture

It's Monday again, and lucky you!  Two posts from me in one day!!  Come on, admit it.  You know you look forward to it.
So for Motivation Monday this week I'm all about the kiddos.  One of the things I was constantly complaining about when I was working was that there just weren't enough hours in the day and often playing with the kids just for the sake of some good old fashioned fun fell by the wayside because of other obligations and responsibilities.  You know...like homework, and eating, and bathing, and of course soccer.  Now that I'm at home for an unspecified amount of time, I have decided that I am going to make the most of it and have some fun with my kids.

Painting, park days, movies snuggled up on the couch with some popcorn, makeovers, and painting their precious little fingernails and piggies to their hearts' content!  Of course, Little Miss will benefit from this slightly more than Miss Thing since she will be home with me all day, but I definitely intend to spread the love and play time.

Also...been doing a little thinking on possibly extending myself a little bit and doing a little bit of child photography.  I definitely love kids, and love photography so kind of makes sense to branch out a bit and combine the two.  I've had some people ask in the past after seeing photos I've taken of my own kids and I've always been too busy.  So now may be a perfect time to try something new.

Because seriously...how fun is it to capture moments like this??

and this??!

Miss Thing struggles with her self-confidence a bit because of some things we went through a few years ago and it made my insides go all warm and mushy when she looked at these photos and said, "Wow, I look BEAUTIFUL!!"  Yes.  Yes she does.  So thankful that I captured it and that she sees it in these photos, even if she doesn't quite see that she is this beautiful all the time yet...it's a start.  I intend to print these photos and display them in our home so that she has a reminder every time she walks by them.  Wouldn't it be awesome to have all kids see themselves that way?!

Ok, so now it's your turn.  Head on over to Nain's blog and link up what's motivating you this week!!

Modern Note Card Series- 2

Happy Monday!  So strange to not be going to work this morning.!  Nice in a way...but definitely different! I am not going to get too comfortable in this stay-at-home role, but I think I like it!  I was a work at home mom up until about a year ago.  I was pretty spoiled getting to be here at home all day long.  So were my little misfits! It was a big, difficult decision to go work outside the home and now I've sort of come full circle.  I know it will be hard to go back again when it's time so I might as well enjoy the time I have with my little miss during the day while I am able to {and the hubby too when he's home}!

Obviously my day of mourning for my job is over and I'm doing my best to just move past it and open myself up to whatever opportunities lie ahead for me.  When one door closes, another one opens up...or if not a door then at least a window.  And in the words of Forrest Gump, that's all I have to say about that.

Now on to today's fun stuff...here is card number 2 in the modern note card series that I showed you yesterday.
I like that this is a fun print but at the same time it's still graphic and clean.  This one can also be customized with colors and sentiment just like the one from yesterday.

Be back tomorrow with card number 3 in the set!

December Daily

Forgive me in advance for any emotional rambling that comes out today.  I lost my job today.  It came as a bit of a shock...and maybe it shouldn't have.  I worked for a doctor's office and recently the doctor decided to make some changes and stop accepting insurance and developed a system using sort of a menu of service options.  Well out of 5,000 patients, only 30 had signed up as of yesterday for the new program.  A couple weeks ago he assured me and the others working in the practice that our jobs were safe and we had no reason to be worried at all.  I believed he'd keep his word, so I didn't really bother with any preparation that I might be losing my job.  I had only been there for 6 months so I was the low man on the totem pole.  I went in for work this morning in a great mood, ready for the day and he dropped the bomb on me right when I got there before anyone else showed up.

To say I'm overwhelmed is a bit of an understatement.  It's a month until Christmas.  We have 5 kids.  We are building a house that is to be completed in February.  It could all fall apart now with this.  I'm incredibly stressed out and worried about how we're going to make ends meet.  To top it all off, my husband is halfway around the world on a mission for work so I don't have him here to reassure me that things are going to be ok.

I did manage to send in my application for unemployment this morning when I got home.  At least they have that all accessible online so I didn't have to go anywhere in all my puffy, red-faced, runny nosed, emotionally disasterous glory.  My poor babysitter.  I think I may have scared her **Sorry**.

To make myself feel better, I did spend quite a bit of time working on some craft stuff...it always brightens my mood.
I started my December Daily.  Sort of.  I started gathering some supplies that I can use for it.  Designed a couple sheets of patterned paper, made some tags, etc and started on getting things printed and all in one place.  Here is a shot of some of the paper, including 3 of the ones that I made myself...

Mine of course are the ones on the top.  I have a thing for polka dots lately...I made a red one too...that one isn't in the picture.  And that damask print, yum.  Love it.
These will all be trimmed down.  I can't decide how big I want the album to be.  Maybe 6x6...maybe 8x6...decisions decisions.  If you're not familiar with the December Daily concept, go check out Ali Edwards blog here

I also made my first ever sock monkey.  Actually I made 2.  They aren't great,I don't think I used the best kind of socks for the project but my girls like them.  Here they are...

Please ignore the hanging strings and such, I haven't had a chance to clean that all up because the misfits ran off with them as soon as I had all the pieces sewn together!

I guess the good news is that I'll have a lot more time to keep this thing updated and to work on more designs!

Motivation Monday: Competition

It's Monday again, which means it's time for Motivation Monday over at my best friend Nain's blog, View From Down Here.  Come join in the fun and link up your post about what's motivating you this week!

This week I'm talking about my motivation for weight loss because, let's be honest, I think everyone who is going down that road can use as much as they can get.  I know I sure can.  I seem to do best when I put myself up against another person.  Last year about this time, my husband was deployed to Qatar and we kind of had a back and forth about working out and getting healthy.  I lost 30 lbs competing with him!  He'd tell me his workouts and I'd try to one-up them.  If he did 10 miles on the elliptical, I'd shoot for 11+.  It was a good way to push myself.

Right now, my motivation isn't against my husband, although we still do that same back and forth...this time it's with my older sister because she has reached what I consider to be my goal weight, 135 lbs.  This is HUGE motivation because now it seems so much more attainable.  She doesn't work out much, but did make some changes and some sacrifices to get where she is and I know if she can do it, so can I.  Unlike her, though, I actually really enjoy exercising.  I just need to make it more of a priority.  My sis and I have always had kind of an unspoken competition between us, like many sisters do.  (Nothing unhealthy, of course.)  We just push each other.  We used to go play tennis.  Well...what we called tennis!  We didn't exactly follow the rules, but we'd volley back and forth and kind of make a competition out of it to see who would miss first.  We'd laugh like crazy at each other and had a blast, and we were working out.  Now that she's halfway across the country from me, we talk about what works, what goals we have, etc. These days, that's really keeping me motivated to keep chugging along.  I'm down 12 lbs since she and I started talking about it.  Pushing to double that by Christmas.

Here's hoping!!

Little Birdie Stationery

I love sending handwritten notes to friends and family.  Just a bit of happy mail to arrive in their mailbox and make someone's day.  Love that.  I'm always on the prowl for cute stationery...or always designing my own when I can't find what I'm looking for.  That's the case with this little birdie stationery.  I wanted it for a specific person, but it turned out so cute that I printed off a whole  bunch and use it quite a bit!

I actually have a stack of these all written out and in the envelopes ready to mail...guess I should get on that!  What do you think of it?  Wouldn't a note on this cute paper brighten your day?

Another soccer Saturday

We woke up to a frosted yard this morning and a very chilly house.  I must say I am not a fan of this time of year in SC.  I normally love the fall, but the fall in South Carolina is frustrating.  You start off the day somewhere in the 30-45 degree range, then by lunch time it's near 70-80 degrees, and then overnight it dips well into the 30s.  It's too warm during the day to have the heat on, too cold in the evening for the AC.  Would be nice if it would just make up it's mind!

We got all bundled up to survive the igloo that was our house this morning for C's second to last soccer game of the season this morning.  (Honestly think it was warmer outside than inside our house today when we left).  The team played the best they have all season and it showed with the final score of 6-0!  They've come a really long way since the beginning of the season.  We're so proud of our girl. She had 3 assists today.  She had a long face, though, because she wanted a goal.  One game left...maybe she'll get her first one.  The highlight of the day was getting back her soccer pictures, and this proud mama has to brag for a second...

She's pretty cute, right?!  Photo taken by APL.

Ok, so on to some crafty type stuff...I whipped up these little babies to help beautify our gifts a bit this year.  Trying to get a running start on all of the preparation-can't believe it's just over a month away!

The front

and the back

The hubby will be back in a few hours so I am off to finish cleaning up the house!  Happy Saturday!

Fall table

My sewing machine has been extremely busy lately.  Well...I've just been extremely busy in general lately!  Here's another new project to share...

I made these place mats, the table runner (cut off in the photos but the ends are done with the same fabric as the place mats), and the vase wrap.  Found these gorgeous fabric flowers on clearance at Walmart ($3 for the whole bunch!) and I just LOVE them.  They are a perfect match to the fabric I found for the place mats.

Just in case you were curious...I did finish the shelves...here there are at home in C's room.  Another bad photo...sorry!  I'm going to get some cute little fabric cube things for the shelves, but for now there is just random stuff on them.  Still needs some more finishing touches, but the hard part is done and she loves them!

That's all for today, folks!  Thanks for stopping by.

Quick Update

SUCCESS!  The shelves are built!  Working on painting them now.  I ran out of paint, so off to Lowe's tomorrow to get some more  but here is what they look like now:

Please excuse the horrible photo.  It's dark outside and poor light in that room, but I wanted to share the progress.  The paint looks a little splotchy right now because they aren't done but you get the idea of what the color will look like.  Here's hoping I'll get them done tomorrow!!

A little peek

**Keeping my fingers crossed that the hubby does not read this before he comes home on Friday.
I am working on a project for Misfit 1's room.  See...we did have the girls upstairs all together in our ginormous FROG.  But Little Miss wasn't getting much sleep because she'd wake up every morning when her big sis was woken up for school.  As I've mentioned before, Little Miss is her mother's child.  We are NOT morning people.  We are "leave us alone until we wake up on our own" people.  If that means we wake up on our own at 5 a.m. then we're all good, but to get woken up...not so much.  Anyway, we separated them out so Little Miss has her own room, the boys will now be upstairs in the FROG, which is shared with my studio since they are only here in the summer and over Christmas break and Spring Break, and Misfit's 1 and 2 will share a room when 2 and the boys are here.  Got all that?  Long story short, for now they each have their own room.   Well, Little Miss got the room that was painted, which was my old studio, because it's painted in green stripes (we didn't do it, but were asked to leave it) and Misfit 1 wasn't all about the stripes.  So she got the plain room and it is P-L-A-I-N.  I hate going in there.  It's downright depressing.  We haven't decorated much because we'll be moving out soon and don't want to do anything that would be a big hassle to take down.  Quite the dilemma for me because I am just bursting at the seams with ideas for her "tween" room.

Have to put most of them on hold.  One of them however, was to give her some storage.  I spoke about this with the hubby and we decided we'd build them ourselves.  Or he said he would build them.  Here's where the surprise comes in.  Guess what I'm doing?

It involves this:

And these:

A little peek at my work in progress:

I will show the finished product as soon as I finish it, which will hopefully be tomorrow!  I got my inspiration from this:

I found this picture by googling "tween girl bedrooms" just looking for random ideas of things we can do in the short term before we move.  I fell in love with the look of those shelving units.  I think I was drawn to the polka dots too but my girl has already put the kibosh on any polka dots in her room so gotta do with out that.  My project is slightly different than this, but same general concept.  I'm SO excited to get it finished!!!
